On December 23, 1986 pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager took off from Edwards Air Force Base to make aviation history. Their experimental plane was aptly named Voyager. It was designed to be lightweight, strong, and most importantly carry a heavy load of fuel. No stopping on this historic voyage!
The trip took 9 days, and 25,012 miles, with only five gallons of gas left in the tank. Talk about cutting it close!
Today you can visit the Voyager at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Perhaps you can see yourself in the cockpit leading your own expedition!
